Assignment Brief

 Data Collection

For this assignment we had to choose a video- or 'granny'- from the Pasta Grannies' youtube channel and create an animated infographic poster. Naturally, I found the granny whose name I relate to most:

Fig. 1.1 Pasta Grannies - Violetta's Hand-Rolled Maccheroni (Youtube)

I watched the video carefully and wrote down all that I needed to on my laptop's note application, which can be seen below:

Ingredients

  1. Kid-goat leg meat
  2. Garlic
  3. Olive oil
  4. Parsley
  5. Tomatoes
  6. Tomato paste
  7. Flour
  8. Warm water
  9. Grated pecorino cheese
  10. Salt

Tools

  1. Iron spatula
  2. Metal rod
  • Making sugo (sauce)
  • Cube meat from a kid goat leg (alternative to lamb in Basilicata)
  • Softens garlic cloves in olive oil on a pan
  • Add parsley (Violetta takes it from her own balcony!)
  • Add all previous ingredients (meat, garlic, olive, parsley) into the pan
  • While the meat cooks (browns)
  • Peel and chop fresh tomatoes
  • Adds the peeled and chopped tomatoes into the pan and leave it to simmer for a few minutes
  • (Giovanni adds homemade) add tomato pasta to the mixture
For the Maccheroni / macaroni
  • Violetta uses finely ground durum wheat flour
  • Add warm water to the flour
  • Use tip of fingers to mix it in and make the dough
  • Knead the dough (Violeta says the secret to pasta dough is kneading it to 30 minutes)
  • (Iron spatula Is called ‘rasoi? Rasoya? In Basilicata)
  • Use the iron spatula to chop the the dough
  • Roll the dough until it turns into cigarette width strands
  • Pinch off ten centimeter size lengths
  • Use a metal rod (Violeta uses a broom branch (or broom-stick!) to roll the dough into a tube-like shape by starting on top of the pasta at a slight angle
  • Violetta says “don’t hold the pasta tube too tight or it won’t come    off the stick!”
  • Place the pasta dough in boiling salted water for 3-4 minutes
  • The water that’s left is used to rinse the dishes in the traditional way
  • Layers the pasta with grated pecorino cheese and the tomato sauce
  • Serve the meat as a second course

Bon appetit !

After writing everything down, I tried my best summarizing it into smaller portions of words. there are two major steps in this recipe, and each was able to be summarized into six steps.

Sugo (Sauce)

  1. Cube meat from a kid-goat leg
  2. Soften garlic cloves in olive oil on a pan
  3. Add the meat and parsley into the pan
  4. While the meat cooks, peel and chop fresh tomatoes
  5. Add peeled and chopped tomatoes into the pan
  6. Add tomato paste and leave it to simmer for a few minutes

Maccheroni (Macaroni)

  1. Mix flour and warm water with the tips of your fingers and knead for 30 minutes
  2. Use an iron spatula to chop the dough and roll into cigarette-width strands
  3. Pinch off ten centimeter length off the dough
  4. Use a rod and gently roll the dough into tubes from the top of the pasta at a slight angle
  5. Place dough in boiling salted water for 3-4 minutes
  6. Layer the pasta with grated pecorino cheese and tomato sauce

Serve together with the meat as a second dish!

Seeing as there was the same amount of steps for both the sauce and maccheroni itself, I searched up posters I can find as inspiration.

 Visual Research

Fig. 1.2 Reference Poster

As I was searching for a reference that I can apply to my poster, I found the poster seen in figure 1.2. The poster splits the elements to the sides, and I had an idea to do something along those lines.

 Moodboard

I started off my project with a mood board, using screenshots I took of the grannies and color palettes that I believe suits the overall vibe. I placed them all together in one as seen in figure 1.3. I started scattering elements onto illustrator to see how I would like the poster to look like.

 Illustration Progress

Fig. 1.4 Sketches (20/2/2022)

Fig. 1.5 Ingredients Illustrated (23/2/2022)

I started with drawing the elements on a sheet of paper. I didn't sketch out the layout because it was hard to figure out the sizes of it all, and I was skeptical that it would match with what is hand-drawn. So, the idea is to draw all the elements first and then placing them on the poster canvas itself.

 Final Poster

 Animation

The animations were done very simply, mostly using the manipulation of scales and opacity.

 Feedbacks

General Feedback

The general feedback that I've gotten is to think creatively. One of the examples is to use the clothing the grannies are wearing as inspiration for colors and patterns of the poster itself. Another example is to keep texts and images around the same amount as too much of each gets crowded. I've gathered the feedback to also apply what I've learnt in the group project such as morphing and easy ease on the animations.

Specific Feedback

Feedback I've gotten was to use a brighter background if I wanted to use offset paths on the elements. I opted for the light beige. Another one I've gotten was to match the styles between one object and the other, as the onion was using gradients and most others were not. I was suggested to not use hand graphics in the animation.

 Reflection

Creating an animated poster was much more challenging than I had originally thought it to be. It took me a while to figure out how the designs would look like, which led to just drawing the ingredients first and then building up from there. I will admit that it was also much more fun that I thought. I particularly enjoyed using effects on the animations.

Doing this project wasn't lacking from inspiration, as I had also looked at some of my peers' work. I loved the color scheme and the framing they used in the animation background but tried doing something different. Instead, I used a darker shade of the background in the poster to make the title pop out more. I see as well that the transitions they used were simple yet efficient and works well. I decided to use color-changing background in response.

Lastly, I've found that from doing the other projects, I used what I learnt very often- which is to motion blur and apply easy ease on the keyframes for most of the animations. I also realized that I have been paying more attention to animations that could possibly have been done entirely in after effects. For example, I attended a movie screening and noticed what animations were done smoothly and what was more obviously done in after effects.

Overall, although I was still incredibly slow in doing my tasks, I had so much fun learning how to do what I enjoy doing even better than before. The improvement I've been getting are becoming more obvious as time passes!
