Assignment Brief

FLIP 1: Different Types of Infographics

GROUP TASK

our first task for FLIP 1 was to gather in our groups and make a presentation on different types of infographics, what they are used for, and when it's most applicable.

INDIVIDUAL TASK

Our individual task was to use an online tool to improve a poorly designed infographic. I chose to improve an infographic used to advertise Papa John's Pizzas.

I say it's wrong because in its effort to be creative, the designer used a "pizza" pie chart, while trying to inform the audience of a timeline. The right kind of infographic that should be used is a timeline infographic.

Using the help of Infogram, I created a timeline infographic. I chose similar colors to its original infographic, a dark background and yellow main elements. Extra borders and background details are pizzas to show that it's specifically for a pizza infographic.

Infogram Rating

6/10

I believe 6 out of 10 is an appropriate for Infogram. It was easy to use and plenty of free templates were available, however the free cliparts weren't so great and I had to reuse the same clipart repeatedly. It was confusing at first how to transform the elements and move things around.

 Motion Graphics

For another exercise, we were told to create a motion graphics chart based on a data set for each individual. My part is to animate the chart about COVID-19 cases by age in India.

I started with a circle, then increased the line thickness until it builds a full circle.

I had almost made a different chart animation, before realizing I was only assigned one.

The motion graphic chart doesn't use the same colors as the original, as I wanted to try a different color scheme. I attempted a transition between the first graphic and the second.

 Reflection

During the creation of these presentations and FLIP exercises, I was exposed to new applications and interfaces. Most notably is canva, google slides, and since I had it as my infographic improvement online tool, Infogram. I was able to find the differences of these tools and learn how to maximize the capabilities. With the help of my teammates, I was also able to figure out how to better create a pleasing layout in a presentation.

In the presentations, I observed that there are several different ways to categorize infographics. Most of the time, I realize I use an alphabetical order to sort everything. After doing these exercises I started branching out the way I plan my schedules using different methods, mostly with the order of L.A.T.C.H..

I've started a habit to add more details into the background of things, and very subtle ones. I believe they improve the quality of a design as it helps to create images that don't feel too empty or overcrowded. I also realize I have been using gradients more frequently. Learning how to animate using different functions had also helped a ton with other future projects.
