Brainstorming
Along with the problem statement's draft completion, we compiled ideas and brainstormed for our next step. Since we were drawn toward the effects it has towards water and nature, we gathered a lot of inspiration from watery aesthetics as well as land environment-centred ideas.
Process Week 1
Rough Sketches
Along with the problem statement's draft completion, we compiled ideas and brainstormed for our next step. Since we were drawn toward the effects it has towards water and nature, we gathered a lot of inspiration from watery aesthetics as well as land environment-centred ideas.
Members of the Entertainment Design module were the ones leading the sketching phase. 'Growth' is the first idea presented, showing a design of a person nurturing a plant's growth.
'Growth' was actually part of a set with 'Flow', but separated due to a slight shift in the meaning. 'Flow' has a more negative connotation as it's directly showing the impact of the unused gasses from inhalers on the environment, thus 'attacking' the plant that symbolizes our ecosystem.
Lastly, we have 'Plants and Supplants' focusing on both the effect and the solution to the problem.
Feedback
- Split the references into two: water and land-based inspirations.
- Consider combining every meaning for a fleshed-out final sketch and meaning that will encompass everything that's needed.
Process Week 2
Rough Sketches Refinement
As requested, we refined a few ideas and I was in charge of sketching them. The first one below is a refined version of 'Flow', suited to our skills and avoiding too much complexity while showing the main focus of the sculpture's intended meaning.
Fig. 3.1 'Flow' Refinement #1 (18/4/2023)
While this was in the works, one of our groupmates, Abigail, actually thought up a new concept and shared it with us the new idea focusing on the negative effects on water supplies and marine life.
Fig. 3.2 'Float Away' (16/4/2023)
'Float Away' focuses on the downside caused by improperly disposed of medical waste. The main subject, the turtle, seems as if it's suffocating and searching for air.
Fig. 3.3 'Pots and Supplants' Colouring and Additions (15/4/2023)
Last, we fixed up a better idea for 'Pots and Supplants' that includes both the requested balloon elements and shows aspects of the oceans.
Feedback
- Attempt to combine elements from 'Float Away' into 'Pots and Supplants'
Process Week 3
Finalizing Art Proposal
After discussing with the group, we agreed from seeing the sketch that it might be difficult to visualize 'Float Away's' components into 'Pots and Supplants' without seeing it in real life, so we scratched the idea in the sketch. Instead, since we were doubling down on this idea, we cleaned up the sketch and broke it down into a version with and without the outer layer (outer layers being the balloons and 'waves').
After the clean-up was done, we considered some materials that are needed other than the inhalers and blister packs: frame shelf, wires, glue and glue gun, possibly cardboard and unused paper, and the balloons. Haura was then in charge of finalizing the colour palette combinations.
The first one is based on the original colour sketch, just cleaned up.
Most members voted on using the last colour palette for the final outcome.
Feedback
- Feedback is given in spreadsheet format
Next course of action
We could start on the prototyping. We'll start preparing the extra
materials needed and consider the height and width of the
prototype.
Submission
Reflection:
Experience
During this task, we all faced some hardships with creativity. The ideas were flowing in quickly but it was extremely difficult to vocalize them or realize them into a clear sketch. Luckily, our discussions were fruitful and we were able to consider a lot of ideas while also contributing to the quality of the idea we doubled down on.
Observation
Seeing the other group's ideas, we were able to see how different our thought processes were from plenty of them. Some were more focused on nature's animals, and others were more focused on the human response in general.
Findings
After completing this task, I realize that we can create a lot of different ideas from a similar prompt and that a group's discussion and opinions are always worth digging through to spark ideas.
