Material Gathering

During the sculpting stage, our research was done in the form of looking through online and offline shops for material gathering. Further detail on the products and prices of additional materials will be discussed in the following section.

Process

For our installation process, we all divided into several groups and tasks while going to the sculpting room every day in our independent learning week for a constant level of progression. It was a tight squeeze with the deadline, but all were done on time even with setbacks such as our group members getting sick here and there.

1. Frame

Haura was in charge of ordering the wooden planks, which came in late in the middle of the Independent Learning Week. We were confident that we had a working idea for how the frame should go, but it was difficult putting them together with the measurement differences and possible miscalculations. They were only off about a centimetre or two, but it's crucial for size differences to be at a complete minimum. Since all our members were inexperienced with woodwork, Wai Fern offered to complete the frame with her parent's help to create a stable one. In the end, it was able to withstand more than 5kg, which was measured by placing her adorable pet dog.

2. Tree

The tree was done by using 5 (total) coils of wire, proceeding to be wrapped with plastic wraps which were taken from the wooden plank's packaging. The wires were twisted in a manner that left room for the tip to be in different lengths and creating an illusion of tree branches. The difficult part about the tree was mostly balancing it while glueing the leaves on.

Speaking of which, the leaves were done by first compiling a bunch of the popped blister packs and cutting them into oval convex shapes. The patterns are then squeezed by the tips to make depth in the leaves shape. This process took the longest time as we needed to cut them one by one into different sizes while still keeping track of the number of blister packs used, then laying them all down onto a cardboard template to be spray painted without flying away as one area is coloured and the other is not. Then the process of glueing the leaves in itself took a lot of time, thus this process was done simultaneously with the other tasks to keep our progression consistent.

Not to mention the smaller friend of the tree, the sprout that lays on the second pot. The process is exactly the same but with a drastically smaller amount and scale. We made sure the leaves amounted to 5 as the number meant a sort of new beginning, which fit with our theme with the middle pot as an early result of people's work in tending to the environment more.

3. Pots

The pots were done exactly as we planned. Starting from the very top, Wai Fern suggested and used a paint bucket as the base shape, then building the curve from there onwards. There were three pots, and all ended up being in a variety of sizes even with the same base size. either way, we finished it quite early and moved on to creating the rims made out of the inhalers altogether.

4. Waves

For the waves, we first made sure our base was strong enough. We originally planned to use a wire mesh, but it wasn't large enough to cover the entire sculpture as planned. Luckily, I had a large supply of cardboard from my house moving process and used them all to create a solid base. We then layered it the same way we did with our prototype, from the top to the bottom. It was after they're all glued that we started spray painting it.

Feedback

  • Make sure the sculpture can withstand a lot of shaking as it needs to be in a van.
  • The sculpture should be all one piece with a direct meaning.
  • Using the maximum height would be beneficial to the shape of the sculpture.

Reflection:

Experience

With my experiences so far in this class, I only know what it's like recently to handle a lot of material while also considering the budget and managing the time. There was a problem with inhalers as everyone said they didnt have enough, which made me feel a little confused or disappointed as my group had already mentioned that the extra inhalers were in a certain corner. Sometimes it felt as if we weren't listened to, but it's alright as it all turned out fine either way. Everyone sacrificed a lot to be able to make it to our daily meetings on time and to make our design stand out. Even so, we were rooting for the other groups as they did the same. It was fun meeting everyone and figuring out the three dimensional shape of everything.

Observation

During our process, we were also able to take a peak at the rest of the groups' work. I personally saw that they used a lot of additional material and it made me wary of how much additional material we were using as well. At the very start of the semester we planned to use as much of the blister packs as possible instead of other items, and thankfully we achieved that goal in the end.

Findings

Finally, we all finished our presentations and were asked a good amount of questions regarding our concepts and process. We were stuck on how to answer a question regarding our pitch, as deep down I knew as well that our sculpture didnt meet our expectations. Through this, I learned how to consider the selling point of my projects and how It's possible to incorporate a more direct symbolism rather than a hidden one.
